Karnataka Nati style Fish Sambar Recipe | How to prepare Fish sambar with authentic Karnataka style | Fish sambar recipe with less ingredients



Here I have listed a different style of Fish sambar recipe which is prepared in Karnataka and village style. You don't require to use more ingredients for this sambar. with fewer ingredients, nice aromatic fish sambar will be ready to eat.


How to prepare Fish Sambar : 

Ingredients needed:

Fish ->1  kg(I have used catla fish)


Turmeric -> 2-3 tea spoons

Salt for marination

Tamarind juice-> 1-2 small cups


To grind/ For masala:

Coconut ->1 cup grated

Onions-> 2

Poppy seeds->2-3 spoons
(you need to add poppy seeds in more quantity for this recipe compared to your regular measures)

Cloves-> 4-5

Cinnamon-> 1-2 medium pieces

Sambar powder-> 2-3 tbl spoons

Coriander leaves-> 1 small cup 

Fried gram(Hurigadale) -> 1-2 tbl spoon

Ginger grlic paste- 1 tble spoon (or less)
(In nati style, we dont add ginger garlic paste more or you can even skip it)


For tempering:
Curry leaves-> 2-3 sticks of leaves

Onion->1 small one

Preparation time: 30-40 min


Recipe or Method:
1. Clean the fish thoroughly. Add turmeric and salt and keep it aside


2. Roast onions in little oil before grinding.

Grind all the above-mentioned masala and keep it ready.
Note: here in this recipe, I have not used ginger garlic paste. Poppy seeds needs to be added more

3. Next take a vessel for preparing sambar, heat the vessel.

4. Add Oil, Curry leaves, medium sliced Onion, and fry till onions become translucent.

5. Add Grounded masala, and fry the masala paste till the raw smell goes away

6. Add Tamarind juice accordingly and also add water to the required quantity. 1st add 1 cup of juice 1st and see the sourness. If you need a little more sourness add some more tamarind juice.

7.Adjust salt as per your taste and let it boil

8. Once Sambar is cooked and boiled enough(let it boil for 10 min at least), later add fish to it.
Once you add the fish you shouldn't stir the sambar since the fish cooks very quickly and will break.


9. Leave the fish to cook in sambar till 15-20 min. and serve it hot with rice and Ragi balls.
